The set-up. (This is what the call "high-concept"): Every mammal in the world with a Y chromosome is dead. The only exceptions: Yorick Brown a young amateur escape artist (who talks just like Peter Parker) and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand (which must be said is a great name for a monkey). Because - yeah - while there's been loads and loads of "The Last Man on Earth" style entertainments (from Charlton Heston to Will Smith): no one's ever really touched on the idea embedded within that cliché of depicting a world where the woman are still alive too. So: Let the adventures begin. etc.

When it's being not as smart as it seems to think that it is (oh look men and women are different and stuff social critique blah) this is a comic that provides lots of good solid trashy fun. Betrayals. Double-Crossing. Unlikely friendships. Unrequited love. And a fanatical homicidal motorcycle group called the Daughters of the Amazon. It's cheap pulpy stuff - but when it's been done with such an infectious sense of joy and when each cliffhanger is more omg than the last - there isn't much cause for complaint [1]. Brian K. Vaughan went on to write episodes of Lost which - to me - makes perfect sense (and you know speaking as a die-hard Lost fanatic: I mean that in a good way). There's ten collected volumes: read them in order.

[1] And I liked the little nod to Preacher. You know - it's respectful.
