A spin-off from Neil Gaiman's Sandman (and if you haven't already - you really should read that first) Lucifer is an enjoyable fantasy epic featuring a cast compromised of school girls, evil tarot cards, and the Japanese goddess of Death (amongst many others) - all engaged in an epic over-arching multi-stranded plot that spans the furthest reaches of existence (earth, heaven, hell and various planes between and beyond). Starring the fallen angel Lucifer Morningstar, the charismatic ex-ruler of Hell - who's prone to saying things like "fate's a slippery sort of concept, though, isn't it. I mean most of the time it's just an excuse for doing what you want to do anyway." and his semi-heroic struggles for new revolutions: there's lots of not so subtle subtext about free will and stuff like that - but it's mainly just an excuse for outlandish stand-offs, battles and big speeches. For my delicate tastes it's a little too wild and especially towards the end never really knows when to say stop but it does have some amazing high points and it's never scared to go over the top - the cosmos be damned.
