Just so we're clear: There's a comment on this article that perfectly sums up my feelings about this series: Fables is comics for people who either a) love James Jean covers and tolerate the garbage in between them b) go to ren-faires and LARPS, c) hate comics or d) hate comics. It’s for people who really think Neil Gaiman is great but he gets a little too out there some times. Oh that Neil Gaiman, he’s hard to pin down with those crazy new ideas."
Fables is an on-going series created in 2002 for DC's Vertigo label. Based around the trials and tribulations of various characters from fairy tales and folklore – who all refer to themselves as "Fables" – who live in present day New York in a clandestine community known as 'Fabletown.' It is very popular amongst a wide range of different people but I have no idea why. Characterisation is pretty much - oh you know that you thought that person was one thing? Well... turns out they're the opposite! The big bad wolf is actually a mis-understood good guy? And Prince Charming is a loverat? Please stop - my mind is blown. Plus - it's boring. Dull. And predictable. Apart from when stuff happens for no explicable reason (other than the fact that it serves the plot) and then it's just silly (and not 'good silly' - 'bad silly'). My only hope reading each succesive volume was that maybe just one character could die in some sort of horrible twisted fashion? But no. They all live on forever and ever and ever being completely milquetoast... (Bluuurgh). Oh - and the art is rubbish too. AVOID.
