Before he made Akira (the book and the film - yep - dude is super-talented) came Domu: a wicked slice of gritty apartment complex mayhem full to bursting of awesome psychokinetic fights and wonders. In some respects a bit of a dry-run for the sprawling majesty of the six Akira books - this is a mini-epic that uses much of the same tricks and ideas - but I'm not complaining. With lavish panoramas of urban development full of sharp edges jutting out from all angles (apparently he studied architecture - which makes a lot of sense) this is a book that made me feel slightly giddy with joy in the way that even the most seemingly unimportant panel would have an abundance of detail in the background: and oh yeah: all the explosions and battles and stuff. Plus: I really love how it ends.
